Colorado Cemetery Records Preservation Project

Small, independent cemeteries often have no plan in place to preserve their documentation and no means by which to make their records available to the public. Therefore, these priceless and rare records are at risk of being lost, destroyed, stolen, or forgotten, denying Coloradans of a vital piece of their rich history.

The Colorado Historic Cemetery Association is studying the feasibility of preserving the original records of these small independent heritage sites to increase public access and improve educational opportunities. The target cemeteries have no municipal oversight or connections to civic/religious organizations that can protect the documents permanently. CHCA is leading a collaborative effort to launch a pilot project to inventory and permanently preserve these records.
